In April 2011 DOC teams had the opportunity to visit Theodore Robinson Intermediate School in Evansville, WI and present to the 4th grade reading classes information about what our dogs do for the community. Every year they read the book, Rosie: A Visiting Dog’s Story by Stephanie Calmenson and their teachers Mrs. Stricker and Ms. Doyle like to “bring the book to life”.
We discussed our training, the many places we visit, and the difference between a therapy dog and a service dog. However according to the children the highlight of the event was their chance to greet and pet each dog. The teams used this opportunity to teach the children the proper way to approach, ask permission and pet.
It was agreed by all that this would become an annual visit.
DOC teams attending were Artie & Henry, Gina & Button, and Jen & Cooper.
