The idea of getting involved with pet therapy began for Jen and Honey at a parade. They were watching from the in-laws’ front porch when family members noticed that Honey was making her way around the front yard greeting family & friends and sitting next to each person to get attention and give love. A relative mentioned that she thought Honey would do great visiting people in the hospital or nursing homes to bring them a little joy. After thinking more about it and doing some research, Jen found Dogs On Call & Pet Partners. They have been members of Dogs On Call since 2012, visiting as a R.E.A.D. team at the DeForest & Columbus libraries and also visiting an assisted living home in Fall River.
The DeForest Library invited them to join in the 4th of July parade to promote the R.E.A.D. program and get more families interested in R.E.A.D.ing to Honey. We’re happy to report that this alternative to advertising the program worked very well, and 5-6 kids have been coming to the library to R.E.A.D. with them ever since.
We are glad they thought outside the box on how to promote this and get more exposure to people in the DeForest community.
Weather permitting, they plan to join in the fun next 4th of July too!
